LHCb observes two new baryon particles

Today the collaboration for the LHCb experiment at CERN's Large Hadron Colliderannounced the discovery of two new particles in the baryon family. The particles, known as the Xi_b'- and Xi_b*-, were predicted to exist by the quark model but had never been seen before. A related particle, the Xi_b*0, was found by the CMS experiment at CERN in 2012. The LHCb collaboration submitted a paper reporting the finding to Physical Review Letters.

Like the well-known protons that the LHC accelerates, the new particles are baryons made from three quarks bound together by the strong force. The types of quarks are different, though: the new X_ib particles both contain one beauty (b), one strange (s), and one down (d) quark. Thanks to the heavyweight b quarks, they are more than six times as massive as the proton. But the particles are more than just the sum of their parts: their mass also depends on how they are configured. Each of the quarks has an attribute called "spin". In the Xi_b'- state, the spins of the two lighter quarks point in the opposite direction to the b quark, whereas in the Xi_b*- state they are aligned.

EU leaders 'not bluffing' over Brexit terms, warns Malta's PM

EU leaders are not "bluffing" when they say the UK will be left without access to the single market when it leaves the bloc if there is no free movement of people, Malta's prime minister says. Joseph Muscat, whose country assumes the EU's presidency in January, told the BBC "this is really and truly our position and I don't see it changing". Theresa May says the UK will begin the legal process to leave the EU by March. Mr Muscat said talks on the details of a "new relationship" could be delayed. Much political debate has focused on the possibility of a "soft" Brexit - the UK retaining some form of membership of the single market in exchange for conceding some control over immigration - and "hard Brexit" - leaving the single market but having fuller control over migration.

Scientists observe how quantum superpositions build up in a helium atom within femtoseconds.

In the double slit experiment, a particle travels on two different paths at the same time. Something similar can be observed when a helium atom is ionized with a laser beam. The ionization of helium can happen via two different processes, and this leads to characteristic interference effects. A team of scientists has now managed to observe the buildup up of these effects--even though this effect takes place on a time scale of femtoseconds. It is definitely the most famous experiment in quantum physics: in the double slit experiment, a particle is fired onto a plate with two parallel slits, so there are two different paths on which the particle can reach the detector on the other side. Due to its quantum properties, the particle does not have to choose between these two possibilities, it can pass through both slits at the same time. Something quite similar can be observed when a helium atom is ionized with a laser beam.

Inserting Special Characters in Dreamweaver

Have you ever wanted to add a special character like a © copyright mark to the end of your web page or add a ™ trademark character? How about a ® registered mark or some sort of âccents or special character fonts like ¥ currency characters? It's so annoying when you just cannot find out how to add special characters and don't want to spend the time on such a small thing but it just bugs you that you know you have to do it.

Well, it just so happens that Dreamweaver is integrated with some of the more commonly used special ascii character codes; Mostly the good ones! So inserting a special character into your html with Dreamweaver is a doddle! You can obviously insert special characters text with your keyboard, but first we are going to cover inserting characters and symbol characters from the Dreamweaver menu.

British Airways to offer wi-fi on short-haul flights

British Airways to offer wi-fi on short-haul flights

British Airways will offer wi-fi internet access on its short-haul flights from 2017, its owner IAG has announced.

IAG-owned Aer Lingus, Iberia and Vueling will also provide wi-fi.

Many rival airlines already offer internet access during flights, with some providing it free of charge.

But one travel expert warned in-flight internet was often unreliable and was unlikely to influence travellers' airline choices.

"My first experience with wi-fi on a flight was about five years ago, when it was offered for free by Norwegian," said Simon Calder, travel editor at the Independent.

"There has not been much take-up because it's not always reliable and many people actually want to disconnect on a flight.

"But it may be that BA and IAG have cracked it and can offer something vaguely reliable."

IAG said up to 341 of its planes would be fitted with wi-fi technology provided by satellite communications firm Inmarsat.

Eastern leaders offer new menu at EU crisis talks

Leaders of 27 European Union countries meet in the Slovak capital Bratislava on Friday - without the UK - to discuss a post-Brexit EU.

Some believe the meeting could reveal an ideological split between old and new, between the established order of Europe's more federalist west and a "counter-revolution" spearheaded by conservative nationalists and populists in the east.

Divisions over the migrant crisis, observers say, could show the true depth of the schism.

Poland's Beata Szydlo has two roles. As Poland's prime minister, she represents 40 million people, many - like herself - devout Catholics.

But Poland also holds the rotating chair of the Visegrad Group, an informal alliance of four Central European countries. So in a sense she speaks for the whole region.

Visegrad, says Mrs Szydlo, has "enormous potential" and "a recipe for the EU" to bring it closer to its disenchanted citizens in the wake of Brexit. That recipe, she says, will be unveiled in Bratislava.

Food Prices May Cool, RBI Rate Cut Unlikely: Experts

Experts and industry said kharif sowing trends indicate cooling of food inflation in the coming months, even as chances of a rate cut in the near-term are low, given the rise in wholesale and retail inflation.

revival of the Olympic Games in 1896, unlike the original Games, has a clear, concise history. Pierre de Coubertin (1863–1937), a young French nobleman, felt that he could institute an educational program in France that approximated the ancient Greek notion of a balanced development of mind

The Greeks themselves had tried to revive the Olympics by holding local athletic games in Athens during the 1800s, but without lasting success. It was Baron de Coubertin's determination and organizational genius, however, that gave impetus to the modern Olympic movement. In 1892 he addressed a meeting of the Union des Sports Athlétiques in Paris. Despite meager response he persisted, and an international sports congress eventually convened on June 16, 1894. With delegates from Belgium, England, France, Greece, Italy, Russia, Spain, Sweden, and the United States in attendance, he advocated the revival of the Olympic Games. He found ready and unanimous support from the nine countries. De Coubertin had initially planned to hold the Olympic Games in France, but the representatives convinced him that Greece was the appropriate country to host the first modern Olympics. The council did agree that the Olympics would move every four years to other great cities of the world.

When examinations need an examination!

If it was not surreally shocking, it would be funny. News from Bihar that two of its intermediate (pre-university course) toppers interviewed in a TV show could not answer basic questions - including so much as naming the subject one had studied - has left the state government, "red-faced after recent claims" that its board examinations were conducted with foolproof security. A fall in the share of candidates who passed does suggest sincere efforts by the government. However, authorities have filed police complaints against a college and four toppers and ordered a special probe into alleged academic irregularities following the revelations. We can take rich guesses as to what might have transpired because cheating invigilators and officials at various levels are in abundance in many parts of India, particularly the Hindi belt. From mass copying to question paper leaks to imposters writing examinations to experts dictating answers by mobile phones to students inside halls, accounts of cheating are legion. Some involve corrupt school/college authorities. Last year, people were outraged over a picture in a village not far from Patna where friends and family members of a school climbed a school wall to pass on, "answer chits." Have we perfected some logistical system of cheating that parallels Mumbai's famous dabbawalas who serve food to office workers?

Counting cats is hard, but we know the numbers aren't good

The biologists also questioned the count itself. The WWF report noted that improved census techniques in places like Bhutan might account for some of the increase. And in India, surveys had been expanded to include tigers that lived outside reserves. That makes it nigh impossible to tell whether the increase detected was due to multiplying tigers or better counting methods. And it calls into question the report's claim that the goal of doubling the tiger population by 2022 is within reach. That “is not a realistic proposition,” the biologists said.

Counting animals is inherently difficult - they rarely line up in a neat row out in the open for scientists to count one-by-one. And while one might think that big, furry, brightly colored cats might be easier to count than other creatures, that's not necessarily so. And these big cats bring the added problem that they can kill those counting them.
