Ted 2017: Elon Musk's vision for underground road system

US entrepreneur Elon Musk has outlined his vision for a tunnel network under Los Angeles and shown how it might work.

Mr Musk also told the Ted (Technology, Entertainment and Design) conference he planned fully autonomous journeys across the US by the end of the year.

He spoke about how he wanted solar-powered roof tiles to be standard on "every home" within 50 years.

'God complex' breast surgeon guilty

Ian Paterson, 59, carried out "extensive, life-changing operations for no medically-justifiable reason". His motives were "obscure" but may have included a desire to "earn extra money", Nottingham Crown Court heard. Paterson was found guilty of 17 counts of wounding with intent, relating to nine women and one man. Jurors also convicted him of three further wounding charges.

Dina Mitchelltold ABC Newsthat the Flex 2 began to combust on her wrist while she was reading a book.

US regulator wants to reverse net neutrality

Top US communications regulator Ajit Pai has proposed reversing net neutrality rules for internet service providers.

The Obama-era measures prohibit broadband providers from giving or selling access to certain internet services over others.

Those who fought to get the rules passed said his proposal would set off a fierce political battle.

Mr Pai announced the plan to roll back net neutrality measures in Washington.

An MP has urged Facebook to tackle fake news in the run-up to the UK's general election on 8 June.

Conservative MP Damian Collins expressed his concernsto the Guardian newspaper, saying fake news threatened "the integrity of democracy".

A parliamentary inquiry examining the "growin g phenomenon of fake news" waslaunched by Mr Collins in January.

Parents' mobile use harms family life, say secondary pupils

An overuse of mobile phones by parents disrupts family life, according to a survey of secondary pupils.

More than a third of 2,000 11 to 18-year-olds who responded to a poll said they had asked their parents to stop checking their devices.

And 14% said their parents were online at meal times, although 95% of 3,000 parents, polled separately, denied it.

The machine uses high-frequency sound waves instead of heat to dry laundry.

As well as speeding up the drying process, it is expected to use up to 70% less energy than conventional dryers.

The dryer has been developed by scientists at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, Tennessee, in partnership with General Electric.

Credit card with a fingerprint sensor revealed by Mastercard

A payment card featuring a fingerprint sensor has been unveiled by credit card provider Mastercard.

The rollout follows two successful trials in South Africa.

The technology works in the same way as it does with mobile phone payments: users must have their finger over the sensor when making a purchase.

Security experts have said that while using fingerprints is not foolproof, it is a "sensible" use of biometric technology.

'Nearly half' of firms had a cyber-attack or breach

Nearly half (46%) of British businesses discovered at least one cybersecurity breach or attack in the past year,a government surveyhas indicated.

That proportion rose to two-thirds among medium and large companies.

Most often, these breaches involved fraudulent emails being sent to staff or security issues relating to viruses, spyware or malware.

Live, long and black giant shipworm found in Philippines

Scientists have found live specimens of the rare giant shipworm for the first time, in the Philippines.

Details of the creature, which can reach up to 1.55m (5ft) in length and 6cm (2.3in) in diameter, were published in a US science journal.

The giant shipworm spends its life encased in a hard shell, submerged head-down in mud, which it feeds on.

Google has released an artificial intelligence-powered drawing program that turns rough scribbles into illustrations.

The BBC's Rory Cellan-Jones is the self-proclaimed "world's worst drawer".

Tesla board 'too close to Elon Musk'

A group of Tesla shareholders has questioned the independence of the electric carmaker's board, warning it is too close to boss and co-founder Elon Musk.In a letter, they said the board was "largely unchanged" since the firm went public and at risk of "groupthink".They urged it to re-elect members annually and to add two new independent directors to the board.In a tweet Mr Musk said the investors "should buy Ford stock" instead.

David Dao dragged off United flight files court papers

Lawyers for a passenger forcibly removed from a United Airlines flight have filed an emergency court request for the airline to preserve evidence.

David Dao was filmed being dragged off the overbooked flight at Chicago O'Hare airport, bloodied and screaming, in a video watched millions of times online.

United Airlines said it would refund the ticket costs of all passengers on Sunday's flight.

The airline's chief executive, Oscar Munoz, is insisting he will not resign.

As of Tuesday, Dr Dao was still recovering in a Chicago hospital, his lawyer said, but a family member is expected to give a news conference on Thursday.

The US government has dropped its request for the identity of an anti-Trump Twitter account, just a day after Twitter went to court over the issue.

@ALT_USCIS anonymously criticised President Trumps immigration policy, and claimed to be run by employees at the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services.

US government officials issued a summons for identifying information.

Mini-Me actor Verne Troyer being treated for alcoholism

Austin Powers actor Verne Troyer has revealed he is being treated for alcoholism.

Writing on Facebook, he said he had been receiving treatment for the last week and would be voluntarily checking into rehab later this week.

The actor said he wrote the post due to concern from fans and said that he had battled alcohol addiction in the past.

Uber sued by car-share stab victim

A woman who was attacked with a knife in an Uber car is suing the ride-sharing company.

Chicago resident Jennifer Camacho says another passenger slashed her face several times while using Uber Pool.

The service lets strangers share a car to reduce the cost of a trip.

But Uber said the "altercation" did not involve the company and its insurance provider has refused to compensate Ms Camacho because the assault was not considered accidental.

Australia makes 'largest ever' crystal meth seizure

Australian police have made the largest seizure of crystal methamphetamine in the nation's history, officials say.The 903kg (1,990lb) haul of the drug, also called ice, is estimated to have a street value of A$898m (£546m; $680m), Justice Minister Michael Keenan says.The drugs were found hidden in 70 boxes of wooden floorboards at a warehouse in Melbourne, according to the Australian Federal Police (AFP).
