As you age, the bone density starts thinning, which results in eventual bone loss and conditions like osteoporosis. Scientists have identified a mechanism that causes the body to stop creating bone-producing cells with age, using which one can now device preventive treatments and measure to stop the bone loss. Osteoporosis is a condition where the loss of bone density and bone thinning increase the risk of fractures in the elderly. This condition is often accompanied by an increase in fat cells in the bone marrow. Nigel - the robot that could tell you how to vote

Apple's "personal assistant", Siri, doesn't do politics. It has stock, non-committal answers for anything that sounds remotely controversial. Not unlike some politicians in fact. But the next generation of digital helpers, powered by advances in artificial intelligence (AI), might not be so reticent. One piece of software being developed by a company in Portland, Oregon, aims to be able to offer advice on every aspect of its users' lives - including which way to vote. "We want you to trust Nigel, we want Nigel to know who you are and serve you in everyday life," says Nigel's creator Mounir Shita. "It (Nigel) tries to figure out your goals and what reality looks like to you and is constantly assimilating paths to the future to reach your goals. "It's constantly trying to push you in the right direction."

Scenes from the crypto gold rush

The first is called Wild Crypto and is that most fashionable of financial fandangos, an ICO or initial coin offering where projects with somewhat hazy business models raise funds by offering for sale their own currency. In this case, the idea is that you subscribe real cash or rather you turn that real cash into the Ethereum crypto-currency and in return you get a new currency called Wild coins. These can then be used to play on the lottery gaming platform that Wild Crypto is developing. The white paper, the document that is an essential but often opaque accompaniment to any ICO, explains it like this: Players will be able to take part in a global lottery and lottery-based games at significantly better odds than national lotteries.

Households 'need help to get warmer home'

Families in other nations receive much more help to reduce bills, the UK Energy Research Centre (UKERC) says. The researchers say recent UK government cuts to energy efficiency programmes are ludicrous and the opposite of whats needed. The government says it will soon announce new policies soon as part of its long-delayed Clean Growth Plan. But it would need to radically improve measures to match the support for home improvements offered in other nations. Currently its hard for anyone in the UK outside the poorest fifth of society to access public funds to help with insulation.

Fiat's 1.3 Multijet diesel to bow out by end of decade

Fiats ubiquitous 1.3-litre diesel engine will be discontinued in India with the incoming of new Bharat Stage VI (BS-VI) emission regulations in 2020, as there are no plans to upgrade the engine to comply with the new norms. With Maruti, Fiats largest customer for this engine, and Tata Motors switching to their own, in-house-developed BS-VI diesel engines, there wont be any takers for the Fiat engine. Also, the future of Fiat itself is uncertain in India and its likely that parent company, Fiat-Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) will axe the Fiat brand and concentrate its resources on making Jeep a success. Even if FCA continues to sell Fiats in India, the sales volume of under 6,000 units a year is too small to justify the huge development costs required to upgrade the Multijet from BS-IV. After we lost Maruti and Tata as a customer, we knew that would spell the end of this engine, said a company source.

Surfacing too quickly from the ocean causes diver to swell up to double his size

Diving into the depths of the ocean may sound fun but one also needs to be extremely careful before taking the plunge. The bends or decompression sickness affecting people while diving can cause joint pain and breathing problems, but in extreme conditions it can leave a person terribly deformed.

A fisherman in Peru suffered a shocking case of the bends after surfacing too quickly from a dive as his arms and hest ballooned. The man who dived to collect creatures from the sea floor has gained around 30 kg as doctors try to treat the deformity.

Lenovo fined over Superfish adware-ridden laptops

The company has also agreed to seek consumers' consent before installing any such software in the future. Lenovo faced uproar when it emerged in 2015 that it had hidden an advert-delivering program made by Superfish on hundreds of thousands of computers. It later provided a tool to remove it. US Federal Trade Commission investigators have alleged that Lenovo first started selling compromised laptops in August 2014. The software involved was called VisualDiscovery, and was made by the California-based start-up Superfish. It was designed to show pop-up ads from retailers when users hovered their cursors over related products on a website.

Google's Street View cameras get quality boost

The new hardware takes clearer panoramic photos, while two high definition cameras capture detailed images of shops and street signs. Data such as shop opening hours can be spotted by machine-learning algorithms and included in search results. It is the first major update to the Street View hardware in eight years.

Tobacco may cause blindness: AIIMS docs

Tobacco not only causes cancer, its prolonged consumption may also lead to blindness, and often such cases are irreversible, doctors at AIIMS said on Friday. They also said studies have shown that those who smoke tobacco, significantly increase their risk of developing cataract compared to nonsmokers. Smoking or chewing tobacco over five to 10 years affects the optic nerve which may lead to visual loss, the doctors said. "Often such cases of blindness are irreversible. People know that smoking and chewing of tobacco causes heart disease and cancer, but vision loss and other eye problems due to tobacco are not widely known," said Dr Atul Kumar, chief of Dr R P Centre for Ophthalmic Sciences in AIIMS.

Why School Days Need To Start Later

No one enjoys being dragged from their bed and thrusted into the waking world before they've had enough sleep. For teenagers, however, an early wakeup is more than a nuisance. There actually are biological reasons as to why they should stay in bed longer -- and why schools need later starting times to avoid harming their development. A wealth of research going back to the 1990s has demonstrated how early school starts are incompatible with adolescent biology. Teenagers sleep differently: most need at least 8-10 hours a night, and changes to their circadian rhythm (or inner clock) during puberty mean they tend to get tired later in the evening.

Canadian university $10m in phishing scam

Fraudulent emails convinced staff at MacEwan University that one of its clients was changing its bank account details. Staff then paid money into the fraudulently created account. The university, in Edmonton, Alberta, is auditing its business practices. Police have traced most of the funds to accounts in Hong Kong and Montreal, but no charges have been laid. The scam came to light when the real client complained of non-payment. "There is never a good time for something like this to happen," university spokesperson David Beharry said in a statement.
