Xiaomi Poco F1 First Impressions: Meet the Most Affordable Phone With Snapdragon 845

Xiaomi has designed the Poco F1 to be in sync with current trends, so it sports a big 6.18-inch display with an 18.7:9 aspect ratio, Gorilla Glass 3 protection, and a notch at the top. The other thing you will notice immediately is the chin, which is thicker than on most other phones we have reviewed and doesn't look appealing. It also houses a tiny notification LED that lights up when charging the device. The back of the Poco F1 is made out of polycarbonate and the phone will be available in three different colours - Rosso Red, Steel Blue, and Graphite Black. There's also a special variant called the Armoured Edition, which has a Kevlar back, and Xiaomi claims to have used real Kevlar in its construction.

Facebook Hires A Head Of Chip Development From Google

Facebook Inc. has sent another signal that it's serious about building its own semiconductors, joining Apple Inc., Alphabet Inc.'s Google, and Amazon.com Inc. in trying to make its own custom chips.
The social-networking giant this month hired Shahriar Rabii to be a vice president and its head of silicon. Rabii previously worked at Google, where he helped lead the team in charge of building chips for the company's devices, including the Pixel smartphone's custom Visual Core chip, according to his LinkedIn profile. He'll work under Andrew Bosworth, the company's head of virtual reality and augmented reality, according to people familiar with the matter.
Spokesmen for Facebook and Google declined to comment on Rabii's move.
Facebook started forming a team to design chips earlier this year, Bloomberg News reported in April. The Menlo Park, California-based company is working on semiconductors, which can be useful for a variety of different efforts, including to process information for its vast data centers and its artificial intelligence work.
Google has been developing more chips for its future devices. Later this year, the Mountain View, California-based search giant plans to release new Pixel phones with upgraded cameras and an edge-to-edge screen on the new larger model, Bloomberg News reported in May.
Facebook and Google's moves are part of a trend in which technology companies are seeking to supply themselves with semiconductors and lower their dependence on chipmakers such as Intel Corp. and Qualcomm Inc. Apple has been shipping its own custom main processors in iPads and iPhones since 2010, and has created an array of custom chips for controlling Bluetooth, taking pictures, and conducing machine learning tasks. By 2020, the iPhone maker hopes to start shipping Macs with its own main processors.
Facebook, through its Oculus virtual reality division and Building 8 hardware divisions, is working on several future devices. Earlier this year, the company launched the Oculus Go standalone virtual reality headset with a Qualcomm smartphone chip. Facebook is also working on its first branded hardware: a series of smart speakers with large touch screens that can also be used for video chats.
Future generations of those devices could be improved by custom processors. With its own chips, Facebook also would gain finer control over product development and could better tie together its software and hardware.
Custom chips may also improve the company's efforts in artificial intelligence. Facebook has been working to use AI to better understand the nature of content people post on social media, so that it can quickly take down hate speech, fake accounts and live videos of violence. But so far, even human moderators are having trouble judging content consistently.
100 Thieves' NICKMERCS Has an Interesting Idea for the Kill Count Indicator in Fortnite - "Nobody is Saying No!"

100 Thieves content creator Nick 'NICKMERCS' Kolcheff has presented an idea for the kill count indicator in Fortnite.
Playing the game live on his Twitch channel as usual, the popular streamer proposed that Epic Games should add an option that allows players to see their teammates' kills counters on the main HUD, should they want to do so.
When playing Duos or Squads, the number of kills that a player's teammates have collected can not be viewed on the HUD, but instead can only be seen by visiting the menu.
With the way third-party Fortnite tournaments and competitive modes are currently set up, getting and keeping track of eliminations is crucial, so the inability to see party members' kill counts quickly can be annoying and disadvantageous.
The former Gears of War pro player believes that not only would the idea prove to be successful, but it also almost seems like a no-brainer.
"I'm calling Epic [Games], I'm going to call them. Listen, I do not really know what I'm talking about, but I know a couple things about a couple things. And if you're sitting down at a big ass table full of people, if you ask them 'Hey, do you think putting your kill count by your name over there on the far right side of that bar, and having it as an option in the settings to toggle on and off, just in case, is a bad idea?' Nobody is saying no, everybody is saying yes. 'Good idea Mercs', and I'll say 'thank you, family.'"
2019 Genesis G70 first drive review: A worthy sport sedan challenger

When it comes to small, sporty luxury sedans, your mind immediately goes to Germany. After all, the Audi A4, BMW 3 Series and Mercedes-Benz C-Class have dominated the segment for years, though challengers from America (Cadillac CTS), Italy (Alfa Romeo Giulia) and Japan (Infiniti Q50, Lexus IS) have certainly put up a good fight. Genesis, the Hyundai spin-off from South Korea, is now prepared to join that battle.
The G70 is handsome, with a more aggressive design than Genesis' G80 and G90 sedans. I like the prominent crest grille, flowing character lines sprinkled along the body, tasteful slathering of chrome trim and available 19-inch wheels (18s are standard). Overall, the design exercises restraint and doesn't wear any over-the-top styling elements like Lexus' spindle grille. The resulting look is clean and sophisticated.
Apple Says Third-Generation Keyboards Exclusive to 2018 MacBook Pro

Last month, Apple initiated a Keyboard Service Program for MacBook and MacBook Pro, after determining that a "small percentage" of the keyboards in 2015-2017 MacBook and 2016-2017 MacBook Pro models may experience keys that feel "sticky," repeat, or do not respond in a consistent manner.
Apple did not identify a cause for the issues, which they call "behaviors," but they're believed to be caused by dust and other particulates becoming stuck in the butterfly switch mechanism underneath keycaps.
Apple has been servicing affected keyboards free of charge, with the process involving the replacement of one or more keys, or the whole keyboard. For the MacBook Pro, the replacements are second-generation keyboards -- often the 2017 variant with slightly different markings on the Control and Option keys.
Then, last week, Apple surprised us with new 2018 MacBook Pro models that feature an "improved third-generation keyboard for quieter typing." These models are not eligible, at least not now, for Apple's service program.
Apple hasn't directly acknowledged whether the quieter, third-generation keyboards dually address the keyboard issues, but iFixit discovered the 2018 MacBook Pro has a thin, silicone barrier underneath each key, which they believe are intended to prevent the dust and crumbs from getting stuck.

How to Add a Pinterest Hover Button to your Blogger Images
Update September 20, 2016: The developer of the code mentioned in this blog article updated the code on September 18. If your hover buttons recently stopped working, make sure you update your blog template with the updated code.
Make it easy for your blog visitors to Pin your images — and add a Pinterest hover button to your Blogger images! What's a "hover button"? It's a button that appears when you put your mouse over an image. Go ahead and test it out on this image below. Clicking on the pink Pinterest button that appears in the middle of the image will allow you to pin this image to your Pinterest boards.
Here are the instructions for Blogger blogs. (This doesn't work on Blogger's Dynamic Views templates or on mobile templates.) For self-hosted WordPress blogs (aka wordpress.org blogs), see this post: How to Add a Pinterest Hover Button to your WordPress Images.
NOTE: This requires editing your Blogger template. Before proceeding with the instructions below, I recommend that you backup your Blogger template first!
- In your Blogger Dashboard click on Template and then Edit HTML.
- Scroll down to the bottom of the code and find this line:
- Copy this code from BloggerSentral and paste it into your template code right above the code.
- Click the "Save Template" button.
- Click the "Close" button.
Now view one of your blog posts and you should see a red Pin It button appear on top of your images when you put your mouse pointer over an image. You can call it quits now — or we can customize things a bit…
USE A CUSTOM PIN IT IMAGE:
Download a Pinterest Icon to your computer or create your own. (You can get my Free Pinterest Buttons for your Blog here – and here – and here!) Then upload your image to an external website such as Photobucket (and skip to step #5 below) – or you can upload it right to your Blogger blog:
- Create a new post.
- Add your Pinterest icon to the post.
- Once you see the image in your post, click the HTML button (top left corner). Now you will see the HTML code of the post. Look for the image code. It will start with
and will include src= followed by a URL in quotes, similar to the yellow highlighted line shown in the image below. (Click the image to view a larger version of it.) Copy the URL that is in the quotes after src= (see the red underlined text in the image below); this is the URL of your image.
- Do not publish this post. The sole purpose of this new post is to store your image on Blogger. I recommend saving the post as a draft just in case you forget the URL. However, you can delete this post if you want to, since the image will still stay on Blogger's web server.
- Now go back to your template's HTML code (Template > Edit HTML) and find this code:
var bs_pinButtonURL = "https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhPMV-9HkrHp0scIqLKnS7O3yoF4w2Nigq830zL9f3wjEHEqsUBcaj8x2G8z-1H0gN8AuROeeAgN31rxeK_fAYg8CxmOG330BGknbrtPnGfWrdo4rVMMTb1R1nxxro4mL-8hvmFTnJ3vwIX/s1600/pinterestx1_72.png";
and replace the URL in the quotes (in red above) with the URL of your image. - Click the "Save Template" button.
- Click the "Close" button.
CHANGE THE POSITION OF THE PIN IT BUTTON:
By default the Pin In button will appear in the center of your image. If you prefer that it appears in the corner of your images instead, you can easily do that. Simply find this line of code in your template's HTML code (Template > Edit HTML): var bs_pinButtonPos = "center";
and replace "center" with one of these positions:
topleft
topright
bottomleft
bottomright
If you want to offset the Pinterest Button from the corner of your image so there is a little space between the button and the corner of the image, you can add some CSS code to the section of your template (Template > Edit HTML): .pinit-wrapper margin:-10px;
(The negative value for the margin pushes the button inwards.) For example, see the yellow highlighted code in the image below:

Hidden writing in ancient desert monastery manuscripts
It should come as no surprise: the Greek Orthodox monk is in charge of hauling. the library at St Catherine's into the 21st Century.
This ancient collection of liturgical texts, including some of the earliest Christian writing and second in size only to the Vatican, is going to be made available online for scholars all over the world.
The manuscripts, kept in a newly-renovated building which was opened to the public in December 2017, are now the subject of hi-tech academic detective work.
East meeting West
A team of scientists and photographers working alongside Fr Justin has been using multi-spectral imaging to reveal passages hidden beneath the manuscripts' visible text.
These include early medical guides, obscure ancient languages, and illuminating biblical revisions.

Among the researchers is Michelle P Brown, professor emerita of medieval manuscript studies at the University of London.

2. Microsoft Stories
Full disclosure: We've totally gushed over Microsoft's "Stories" microsite before. We can't help it -- what better way to revitalize an old-school brand than with a blog that boasts beautiful, interactive, and inspiring branded content? Plus, the square layout of these stories is reminiscent of the Microsoft logo, which achieves a valuable brand consistency.
Microsoft Stories is also a prime example of how a business blog can be a major asset for an overall rebrand. In recent years, Microsoft has worked to humanize its brand, largely in response to a rivalry with Apple. The "Stories" microsite has a simple tagline -- "Get an inside look at the people, places and ideas that move us." It's the softer side of Microsoft, so to speak.
When you're trying to convey a certain brand message, your blog can be used to communicate it -- both aesthetically, and content-wise.
3. Pando
An important aspect of a well-designed blog is a consistent color scheme and style -- after all, 80% of consumers say that color boosts their recognition of a brand.
It's interesting to see how color consistency can unify the more diversified elements of design. Pando, a blog that explores the startup cycle, incorporates blue tones in several sections of its site -- the background, highlight bars, and certain areas of text. But it also uses several different fonts -- all of which manage to look seamless together, when tied together by a cohesive color scheme.
